Data is a problem, as usual.
It appears that data is a problem in Esperanto too! The
most common translations for datum are dateno
and datumo; others I've seen are datao and
donitaĵo. To make matters worse, datumo is considered
by some users to be a collective noun as
is English data (in proper usona komputilista English, anyway), with an
individual piece being a datumano or a datumero,
as in English piece of data.
That said, here are a few samples I've seen:
- datenoj = datumoj = datumo = data
- datenejo = field
- datenbanko = datumbanko = databank
- datenaro = datenobazo = datumbazo = datumaro = database
- datenopo = database record
- datenfonto = data source
- datenprogramo = datumbazoprogramo = database program
- datentraktado = dataprocessing
- datentransigo = data transmission
- datumkontrolo = data validation
- datumstrio = datastream
- datumfluo = dataflow
- datumstrukturo = data structure
- datumtipo = datatype
Forms using datumo seem to be most common. As for the
collection question, I say that this is our chance to settle it
logically once and for all: Respecting both the Latin root and
Esperanto grammar, datumo for one and datumoj for
many!

Dissendolistoj ktp
Lately I've been seeing the term diskutlisto used instead of
dissendolisto. A good example of this transition is found in
revuo Esperanto, junio 2002, in which diskutlisto is
seen on page 125 and dissendolisto on page 129. The
Komputada leksikono
defines dissendilo, angle, as mail exploder. I'm
thinking that dissendolisto was a more general term
before, but is coming to mean something like informlisto
or novaĵlisto, while diskutlisto describes the
situation in which messages flow both ways.
I noticed that
abonu.com
uses the term retlisto.
But the term diskutlisto bothers me. The verb diskuti
seems to carry with it the notion of debate or
argument, and while such is (very!) common on mailing lists,
I'm thinking that it's not appropriate to label them (all and always)
so. Here are the words I'm pondering...
- diskuti
- tr to discuss, debate
- disputi
- ntr to dispute, argue
- konverso
- conversation; konversi = ntr to converse, talk (with), chat
- konversacio
- conversation; konversacii = ntr to converse, talk (with), chat
- dialogo
- dialogue, interparolado; dialogi = ntr to converse
- interparoli
- ntr to converse
I'm uncertain about konverso some dictionaries
consider konverso and konversacio to be synonymous,
while others (older ones, I believe) define konverso
differently (some kind of monetary transaction).
Now, in 2005, a simple solution for this problem of terminology
may have evolved. There is a tendency to calls these things simply
listoj!
But afiŝejo is pretty straightforward for a posting-place,
like a BBS or forumo or novaĵgrupo.
Notoj
- Versio, redakcio and eldono are all versions, but an eldono is one that has been released to the public.
- Strictly speaking, kodo is a collective, of things or an algorithm ktp, and kodaĵo (or kodono) is one element. Loosely speaking, kodo can be used for all three.
- Teko = briefcase, tekkomputilo = laptop computer (subset of portebla komputilo)
